Let’s be honest and admit that everything has its pros and cons. Sleeping in late sounds (and feels) great, but getting a late start to your workday or school day will put you behind and in trouble. Eating dessert after every meal (even breakfast!) sounds fantastic, but all of that additional sugar in your diet can lead to severe health conditions. You name it, whether serious or silly, everything has its positives and negatives associated with it, including braces.
Having braces is challenging in many ways. Yet, the outcome of wearing braces and enduring all that comes with your orthodontic treatment is a beautifully straight smile that is easy to take care of and even easier to show off. Let’s look at the most common challenges of braces from both sides:
- Flossing is a pain. We get it! Flossing your teeth is probably one of the last things you want to do before bed, whether you have braces or not. It takes time, and flossing with a mouth full of metal wire and brackets is definitely challenging. However, not flossing your teeth can lead to serious adverse effects. Cavities can easily form between the teeth, plaque and tartar will build up, and gum disease can occur. All of these are serious oral health issues that can be avoided by flossing.
- Sports participation can be limited. While most people are still able to enjoy competitive sports while wearing braces, certain sporting activities may be restricted. For instance, head-butting a soccer ball needs to be done with skill to protect your mouth from hitting the ball and injuring your lips and gums.
- Regular appointments are annoying. We get this, too! Multiple appointments can be annoying because they disrupt your day and your schedule. Yet, it is the consistency of regular appointments that allow your orthodontist to maneuver your teeth. Making your orthodontic appointments a priority will help you achieve the smile you are after.
