If you’re considering braces or Invisalign, it’s a fact that you’ll have removable appliances in your mouth at some point during your alignment journey. With braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer for a period of time after the braces are removed. There retainers are meant to do what their name implies, they retain or hold the alignment that took place with the braces. Invisalign utilizes clear aligner trays to adjust, hold and align your teeth.
Both retainers and Invisalign are removable. Some people struggle with how to maintain the intended integrity of their trays or retainers. Here are a few helpful tips for caring for them.
- “Set it so you won’t forget it.” Keep this saying in mind. Make sure when you must take it out of your mouth that you are setting it in a memorable place. Have a few spots that you routinely place it while eating or brushing your teeth.
- Utilize the container you were given with it. The container you were given is a tool for helping you to not lose or destroy it. A good rule of thumb should be, “If it’s not in your mouth, it should be in your container.” Do not place it in a napkin during eating. It will most likely end up in the trashcan, and dumpster diving is not a fun activity.
- Your dog loves your retainer and your Invisalign. For some strange reason dogs are attracted to your saliva. Keep it out of reach of Fido! He will see it as a chew toy!
